Dr. Nelson is an attending pediatrician and global health faculty at Mass General and an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Nelson completed advanced degrees in medicine and public health at Johns Hopkins and a degree in tropical medicine and travel medicine at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. His interests include clinical care, teaching, academic research, and program management in dozens of resource-limited areas while working for organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control, Médecins Sans Frontières, UNICEF, International Rescue Committee, International Red Cross and Red Crescent, and Harvard University. During fellowship training, Dr. Nelson served as Liberia’s Senior Pediatrician and as the Interim Chair of Pediatrics and Newborn Medicine for the country’s sole teaching hospital. He has been heavily involved in leading the development, implementation, and evaluation of large-scale, country-level health care services in dozens of countries, including in Europe and Africa. He has developed innovative, award-winning approaches for health systems and health facility assessments. Dr. Nelson directs Harvard Medical School’s course, ‘Clinical Topics in Global Health’ and is the Editor of the textbook, Essential Clinical Global Health. Dr Nelson is also Medical Director for National Geographic Expeditions. In recognition of his global leadership, Dr Nelson received Johns Hopkins’ 2019 Distinguished Alumni Award.
